3. THE CABLE CARS

The cable cars are a way of transport consisting of cabins with capacity to carry a group of people. These cabins travelling in the air are carried by one or more cables. Most of these transportation methods are run by electricity.

The use lifts throughout the world in general, has spread since they safety and speed of communication between places with difficult access. These features will enable the development of important and famous tourist centres and the implementation of major works in the mountains. The reason for designing the cable cars was to have a cabin hanging in the air to serve as a bridge between a place of difficult access to the railway.

That's why one of the first cable cars was built in 1914 by the firm Van Rooll to give access to passenger to the railway in the city of Bern. In 1909 manufactured by the firm Tanfani and Caretti, comes the first cable car itself, with intermediate towers and cabin safety brake, able to ensure maximum safety to passengers, linking Lana with St. Virgil in Merano (Italy).

At the same time and encouraged by the success of this first trial, began studies for the Mont Blanc cable cars in the Alps, which had to be suspended during the war of 1914. Since its completion in 1918, and thanks to financial resources, a new initiative to develop transportation was born and also facilitated skiing. From here on, technical development can be considered extraordinary; some examples: the cable cars of Courchevel (France) with 16 places per cabin, the cabins crossing the Mississippi with 700 metres between the supporting towers, 109 metres high and with a capacity of 2,800 people per hour, true displays of modern technology, advance notice of new developments increasingly audacious and ambitious.
